On the Trail With ALCOM Customers: Inline Trailers

Paul's 3-place inline snow trailer parked outside with dirtbikes and chairs set up on a summer day

ALCOM's home state, Maine, is moving out of winter and into spring, with warmer days mixed among last-minute snowstorms and cold spells. Between the short daylight hours of snowmobile season and the sunny days and muddy trails of four-wheeler season, it's a great time to clean out your trailer, service your sleds and ATVs, and make sure your trailer is ready when it's time to ride. But if you still need a trailer, let's talk about why an enclosed aluminum rig can be the perfect answer to your power sports hauling needs.

We talked with a real ALCOM customer, Paul Michaud, to get the scoop on his pick: the EZ Hauler Inline 3-Place Snowmobile Trailer.

Paul shared that he's put tens of thousands of miles on his trailer since 2018 -- hauling dirtbikes to Florida, and exploring New England with ATVs and snowmobiles. He told us it's a smooth hauling trailer that he would absolutely recommend to any powersports enthusiast.

... and with an endorsement like that, we needed to know more! Our conversation has been edited for clarity.

About the Enclosed Inline Trailer

Paul, you have an ALCOM trailer, right? Which model are you hauling? -- I do have an ALCOM trailer. It's an EZ Hauler Enclosed Inline 3-place snowmobile trailer. It's a V-nose with front and rear ramp doors, which makes it super easy to load and unload sleds without having to use reverse -- just drive in and drive out.

That sounds convenient! Did you add any custom upgrade options for your trailer? -- Yes; I ordered it with "extra height" so a side-by-side can fit nicely without the roll cage hitting the ceiling. This is a necessary upgrade if you ever plan to be able to haul a side-by-side as the roll cage will not fit with most models without the extra height.

Are there any other upgrades you recommend? -- Other options I added were track mats, ski guides and an overhead cabinet in the V-nose. All of the accessories were part of my original order; none were added after. I definitely recommend all of the accessories I ordered! Track mats and ski guides are highly recommended if you're hauling snowmobiles. It protects the floor from the ski carbides and track picks from gouging the trailer floor and provides extra traction when moving snowmobiles in and out of the trailer especially in winter months when snow and ice buildup occurs from loading sleds with snow covered tracks. And the overhead cabinet helps keep needed tools and other items organized and off the trailer floor and prevents them from sliding around during travel.

Multi-Season Adventures

The Inline is a snowmobile trailer, but Paul has turned it into a year-round adventure hauler that can move up to six dirtbikes or a UTV with a roll cage.

What can you tell us about the seasonal conversion process? -- With the configuration I have, the transition is quick and easy. I use the Risk Racing Lock-N-Load system for securing bikes. The base plates of that system remain in my trailer throughout the winter. My snowmobiles easily drive over the base plate and when it comes time to load dirtbikes, I unload the sleds and slide the footpeg locking arms in the base plate and I'm ready to load bikes within minutes. I have the ability to load 6 bikes in my trailer. Other wheel chock solutions may require more configuration time when transitioning.

It sounds like your trailer gets a lot of mileage! -- It does. I've hauled side-by-sides all over the state of Maine! My snowmobiles have been all over Maine, Canada and as far west as Tupper Lake, NY. Dirtbikes have gone as far west as New Berlin, NY, as far south as Okechobee, FL -- and several destinations in between on the east coast. Lots of long hauls and miles have been put on my trailer for recreational activities, but I've also used it to haul furniture, video production gear, construction tools and equipment and dump runs.

Are there any favorite trails or adventure spots you'd like to share? -- My favorite snowmobile destination that I've visited is "The County" (Aroostook County, Maine). Lots of mileage from the Allagash, Madawaska and all the way down to Houlton. Plenty of gas stations to keep you fueled up and lots of places to stay whether you're on a tour with multiple destinations or if you stay at a hotel or rental for the entire trip. If you're heading up to The County, you have to stop at Lakeview Restaurant in St. Agatha and order some of their chicken wings!

The Bottom Line

With year-round hauling potential and plenty of space, we love hearing about how the enclosed Inline trailer has become a trusty partner for Paul's adventures.

Did you replace an older trailer, or was this a totally new investment for you? -- Previously, I used a van to haul my dirtbikes. I had an older two-place clamshell style snowmobile trailer for the sleds along with a small open trailer I would use to haul a dirtbike or for dump runs. I was very limited with space with these trailers, so trips were very tight in the past. This new trailer has allowed me to invite more friends and family and has made hauling much more convenient. It's bigger which means fuel consumption is less efficient and you have to be more cautious while driving but the investment has been totally worth it.

That's great to hear! Is there anything else you'd like to share about your trailer? -- An enclosed trailer is also worthwhile because it's a shed on wheels. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have this extra space for my toys. It has proven to be very valuable in making my life easier on a lot of occasions, from buying and hauling furniture to making a single dump run instead of multiple when the job was big enough. I've even allowed my family to borrow it on a number of occasions. You never quite know what you will need it for -- but when the need presents itself, you'll be glad you have it.
